The Gospel
of Judas
ABC, National Geographic and other news media have made a point of saying The
Gospel of Judas will change the face of Christianity and how it is perceived the first week of
April in 2006.  They assume that The Gospel of Judas is something new.  It is not.  It has been
known for over 1800 years.  It is the product of the Gnostics of the early centuries of our era.
See the quote below from Irenaeus [Roberts-Donaldson translation].

"Others again declare that Cain derived his being from the Power above, and acknowledge
that Esau, Korah, the Sodomites, and all such persons, are related to themselves. On this
account, they add, they have been assailed by the Creator, yet no one of them has suffered
injury. For Sophia was in the habit of carrying off that which belonged to her from them to
herself. They declare that Judas the traitor was thoroughly acquainted with these things, and
that he alone, knowing the truth as no others did, accomplished the mystery of the betrayal; by
him all things, both earthly and heavenly, were thus thrown into confusion. They produce a
fictitious history of this kind, which they style the Gospel of Judas. "

There are over 170 Apocryphal works of the New Testament.  In fact, the discovery containing
the manuscript of The Gospel of Judas also contained the apocryphal works of The First
Apocalypse of James and The Epistle of Peter to Philip in Sahidic as well as The Letters of
Paul in Sahidic and The Mathematical Treatise in Greek.  The existence of these books is
nothing new.

If you read [or listen to in the members section] J.W. McGarvey's Evidences of Christianity, you
will see that over 125 years ago McGarvey dealt with the existence of these extra-biblical
writings as have apologists in dealing with the inspiration and canon of the Holy Bible for
centuries.

That it is interesting that a new more complete copy of  The Gospel of Judas has been found.
But, to say that it will make any difference in Christianity seems to be overstating the case.
More than likely, it will confuse the ignorant, and be a tool of Satan and those who serve him to
bolster the confidence of infidels.  However, the truth of the gospel is unassailable, and its
power is undiminished.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one who
believes, to the Jew first and to the Greek." (Romans 16:16)

"And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build
you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified." (Acts 20:32).
