A New
COMMANDMENT
John 13.31-38
John 13:31-38

Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is
glorified in him. If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and
shall straightway glorify him.

Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the
Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that
ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love
one to another.

Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou?

Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me
afterwards.

Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy
sake.

Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.  (KJV)
Now is the Son of Man Glorified

The time had come for the death of Jesus. Time and time again, Jesus repeats and emphasizes that His suffering and
death are not unexpected events. They were a matter of prophecy.

Psalms 22

Whither I Go, Ye Cannot Come

This is a recurring theme that Jesus will continue to tell the disciples. They cannot follow Him, but they would suffer the
same fate later. They can follow in His footsteps, but unless they are willing to die at the same time (which they were
not), they could not follow Him.

Love One Another

Jesus called this a new commandment. To love one another the same way Jesus loved them. This would be the
distinguishing mark of His disciples. This is how people would know if someone was His disciple.

John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

John 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

Romans 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

Galatians 5:13 ¶ For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the
flesh, but by love serve one another.

Ephesians 4:2 ¶ With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

1Thessalonians 3:12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward
all men, even as we do toward you:

1Thessalonians 4:9 ¶ But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are
taught of God to love one another.

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

1Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of
the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

1Peter 3:8 ¶ Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be
courteous:

1John 3:11 ¶ For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

1John 3:23 ¶ And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and
love one another, as he gave us commandment.

1John 4:7 ¶ Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God,
and knoweth God.

1John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

1John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is
perfected in us.

2John 1:5 ¶ And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that
which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

Can people tell you are a disciple of Christ?

The Cock Shall Not Crow

Peter declares that he will die for Jesus. But, his courage and faith are weak at this point. Rather than show the
courage necessary for martyrdom with Jesus, he shows the weakness that denies the Lord vehemently.

(John 16:25-33) These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more
speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name:
and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have
loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the
world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou
plainly, and speakest no proverb. Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man
should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. Jesus answered them, Do ye now
believe? Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and
shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto
you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have
overcome the world.  (KJV)

(Matthew 26:30-35) And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. {hymn: or,
psalm} Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will
smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go
before you into Galilee. Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of
thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock
crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee.
Likewise also said all the disciples.  (KJV)

(Zechariah 13:6-7) And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall
answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,
and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be
scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.  (KJV)
