(John 4:1-3) When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that
Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself
baptized not, but his disciples,) He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
(KJV)

The Purpose of Baptism

John’s Baptism

Mark 1:1-5 –  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is
written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall
prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye
the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and
preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  And there went out unto
him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the
river of Jordan, confessing their sins.  (KJV)

Jesus’ Command To be a Disciple

Matthew 28:19-20 – Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: {teach...: or, make
disciples, or, Christians of all nations} Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever
I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.
Amen.  (KJV)

Salvation

Mark 16:15-16 -- And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the
gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that
believeth not shall be damned.  (KJV)

Born Again

John 3:1-8 –  There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the
Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou
art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest,
except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto
thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. {again: or,
from above} Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can
he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered,
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he
cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and
that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be
born again.  The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof,
but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born
of the Spirit.  (KJV)

For the Remission of Sins

Acts 2:36-40 – Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath
made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they
heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the
apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent,
and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of
sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and
to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall
call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves
from this untoward generation.  (KJV)

Matthew 26:27-28 – And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them,
saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for
many for the remission of sins.  (KJV)

Whereby Ye Must Be Saved

Acts 11:13-14 – And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which
stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is
Peter; Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
(KJV)

Acts 10:34-48 – Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that
God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh
righteousness, is accepted with him. The word which God sent unto the children of
Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) That word, I say, ye know,
which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the
baptism which John preached; How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all things which
he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on
a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the
people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink
with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach unto the
people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick
and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever
believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. While Peter yet spake these words,
the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision
which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the
Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak
with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water,
that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they
him to tarry certain days.  (KJV)

Wash Away Your Sins

Acts 22:10-16 –  And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise,
and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are
appointed for thee to do. And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being
led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus. And one Ananias,
a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt
there, Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight.
And the same hour I looked up upon him. And he said, The God of our fathers hath
chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest
hear the voice of his mouth. For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou
hast seen and heard. And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash
away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.  (KJV)

Into the Death of Christ

Romans 6:3-11 –  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ
were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into
death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together
in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be
destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from
sin. {freed: Gr. justified} Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also
live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death
hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in
that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead
indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  (KJV)

Put on Christ

Galatians 3:26-29 – For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as
many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither
Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye
are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and
heirs according to the promise.  (KJV)

Cleansed

Ephesians 5:25-27 – Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the
church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing
of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having
spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
(KJV)

Regenerate

Titus 3:4-7 –  But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man
appeared,  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his
mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being
justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
(KJV)

Saved by Baptism

1 Peter 3:18-22 – For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust,
that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the
Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime
were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,
while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away
of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the
resurrection of Jesus Christ: Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of
God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.  (KJV)

Why Did Jesus Not Baptize?

Everything the Bible says about baptism is not changed by the fact that Jesus did not
baptize.

Paul made a point of saying that he was not sent to baptize, but to preach the gospel (1
Corinthians 1:10-17). The point of baptism was not getting wet, the point of baptism was
faith in Jesus and making that our own.

Those at Corinth seemed to have a problem in taking pride in who baptized them. Who
baptized you makes no difference. The point is that you are baptized into Christ. It is
possible that Jesus had his disciples baptize for this reason. (1 Corinthians 10:10-13)

There is also the case of logistics. Jesus baptized more than John, and the flow of people
was so large for John it was said that all Jerusalem and Judea came out to be baptized of
him. (Use of exaggeration) Thus we would assume a large crowd responded to Jesus
teaching. For one person to baptism such a throng would have been a monumental task.
