Have Ye Not
Read, In The
Beginning ...
Marriage is the basic unit of society. Civilization will raise or fall with the
strength of the family.

In Genesis One, the Bible begins with “In the beginning, God created the
heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

Chapter One recounts the six days of Creation, culminating in the creation
of man on the sixth day.
Man was created in the image of God – a spiritual being. Man was made of the
dust of the ground (red dust). But God created man (brought into existence that
which was not), when He breathed into his nostrils the “breath of life, and man
became a living soul.”

When God made man,
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make
him an help meet for him.

And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every
fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and
whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And
Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of
the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he
took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which
the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be
called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave
his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one
flesh. (Genesis 2:18-24 KJV)

All of the animals of creation were brought before man, and none was a suitable
helpmate and companion. Woman was, therefore, created to be man’s. They
were “one flesh” because the woman was from his rib; they were “one flesh”
because the woman was also made in the image of God – she too was a spiritual
being; they were “one flesh” because she was man’s equal in standing before
God – something that no other creature could be. Dog may be “man’s best
friend,” but woman is his compliment and supplement – she is what makes him
more than he could ever be by himself. It is said, “…behind every good man, is a
good woman.”
The old saying of the origin of woman is true …
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of
the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:3 KJV)
There is an order of authority that God has put in place for the family. All are to
be under the authority of God. All are to be under the authority of Christ. The
husband is the head of the wife.

The wife, however, does not approach God and Christ through the man. She
covers her head – the man – when she prays. She prays through Jesus. She
stands before Christ as a “joint-heir of life.”

For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.  Neither was the man
created for the woman; but the woman for the man. (1 Corinthians 11:8-9 KJV)

In the beginning, God created woman for the man. She came from his side.
Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the
man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the
woman; but all things of God. (1 Corinthians 11:11-12 KJV)

Lest the man become conceited and puffed up, it also needs to be remembered
that the man, after the beginning, owes his existence to the woman. Every man
has a mother.

Every person owes their existence to both a man, and a woman except One –
Jesus Christ. He was born of woman, but not of man. Therefore, it may be true
that the first woman came from Adam; but, it is also true that the second Adam
(Jesus) came from woman bringing salvation to mankind. [see 1 Corinthians 15:45-

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour
unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace
of life; that your prayers be not hindered. (1 Peter 3:7 KJV)

The man is not to “Lord it over his wife,” but to treat her with tender loving care.
To treat her as he would a fragile piece of china – carefully, tenderly, lovingly.
She is an heir of eternal life along with her. She is precious in the sight of God,
and needs to be precious in his sight as well. Otherwise even his worship to God
will not be acceptable – “his prayers will be hindered.”

Marriage is not 50/50, it is 100/100!

This is what my father said at my daughter’s wedding. It takes the full commitment
of both parties to make marriage work. Thus, Paul points out that they are to
submit “one to another.”

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit
yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the
head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of
the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to
their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also
loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it
with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a
glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should
be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies.
He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but
nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of
his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his
father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one
flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself;
and the wife see that she reverence her husband. (Ephesians 5:21-33 KJV)

The husband is to love his wife. He is to be willing to give his life for his wife. He is
to be willing to give up all. Jesus was the example. He gave up His existence in
Heaven. He gave His life on the cross for the church. He became the servant of
all. The husband is to follow Jesus’ example in his relationship with his wife.
Marriage was the first and most basic element of society. All of society, all of
civilization is based upon the family.

The family is the basic unit of instruction for: 1. Respect for authority; 2.
Responsibility; 3. Love; 4. Forgiveness; 5. Sharing; 6. Charity; 7. Faith; 8. Morality.
When the family fails, the fabric of society begins to unravel.
