This joke is rather a riddle.

What walks on four legs in the morning, two
legs in the middle of the day, and three legs in
the evening?

From Herodotus (480-425 bc).

Answer:  Man.  He crawls on all fours as a baby.  He walks on two legs as an adult.  And as an old man, he
uses a cane for a third leg.
Author:  Thomas Jefferson 1781

God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when
we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these
liberties are of the Gift of God?  That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I
tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just that His justice cannot sleep forever.

My Old Bible

Though the cover is worn,
and the pages are torn,
and though places bear traces of tears.
Yet more precious than gold,
Is this book worn and old,
that can scatter and shatter my fears.

This old book is my guide,
tis a friend by my side,
it will lighten and brighten my way;
and each promise I find,
soothes and gladdens my mind,
as I read it and heed it each day.

To this book I will cling,
of its worth I will sing,
though great losses and crosses be mine;
for I cannot despair,
though surrounded by care,
while possessing this blessing divine.
