Putting Away,
Departing
and Remarriage:

That's Too Hard!
When Jesus answered the Pharisees' question about divorce, saying that one should not put
away their mate except for fornication and marry another,
"His disciples say unto him, If the
case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them, All men
cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. For there are some eunuchs,
which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were
made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for
the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it." (Matthew
19:10-12)

Even the disciples during Jesus' earthly ministry thought His teaching was too hard! That
sentiment has been echoed throughout the centuries, and reverberates in this century. Harsh,
hard, unrealistic and many other terms are used to describe the doctrine of Christ on divorce.
One preacher told me, "You can't sit in a couple's living room and tell them that. You can't be
that heartless."

Heartless? As I pen these words, tears swell within my eyes thinking of the loved ones, the
friends and acquaintances who are affected by this doctrine. Sympathetic tears fall for the
emotional turmoil that would be created if they would obey Christ; and, even larger and more
frequent tears flow for the thought of their eternal destiny because they will not. The times I have
cried over their condition! However, all of my tears could not change what Christ has said.

Doing what is right and teaching what is right is sometimes difficult.

Jesus said,
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that
leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because straight is the gate,
and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew
7:13-14).

The right gate is S-T-R-A-I-T: "narrow and/or difficult." The wrong gate is wide and broad: it is
easy. It takes effort to do what is right. It takes no effort, or thought, to do what is wrong.

Jesus knows that sometimes the things of this world pull in a direction opposite to the way of
truth. It is called temptation.

"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities;
but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly
unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
(Hebrews 4:15-16)

And, help from Christ and God we can and will receive.

"But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the
rule which God hath distributed to us, a meansure to reach even unto you." (2 Corinthians
10:13).

Therefore, there is no excuse for not doing what is right.

Emotional ties can seemingly almost tear one apart as they obey the commands of the Lord.

Jesus said,
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but
a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter
against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes
shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not
worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he
that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life
shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it." (Matthew 10:34-39).

Our love for God and Christ must exceed our love for others.

Jesus said,
"If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall
give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth;
whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye
know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I
will come to you. {comfortless: or, orphans} Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no
more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in
my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them,
he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him,
and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou
wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If
a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto
him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the
word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me." (John 14:15-24 KJV)

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are
not grievous. (1 John 5:3 KJV)

A labor of love is not always easy, but it is never grievous. The question is: "How much do we
love God?" If He is first, there will be no difficulty in doing what He commands.

There is no excuse for not teaching what is right.

"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all
longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;
but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And
they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch
thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy
ministry." (2 Timothy 4:2-5 KJV)

When it is well received, and when it is not; the truth of God's word must be taught. There will
always be those who will sell their soul to the highest bidder to tell the people what they want to
hear. And there will always be those who will buy the souls of men to appease their amoral
hearts. We need to make sure that we neither sell our soul, nor buy the souls of others.
